TRUST

Trust is not associative (non-symmetric).

Trust is the amount of trust two parties have between each other. Within a buyer and seller relationship the amount of trust for each party is not always the same. Sellers can have a high quantity of trust in the buyer. Sellers place trust in buyers by them providing the money or service agreed on. This is contrasting to the buyers, where they may have less trust in the seller providing the goods or service that they might require to buy or agreed to. The buyer might not have the same trust that the product that will be delivered to them is the same as the one that was purchased.

Trust is not transitive.
Is the relationship extended automatically to one domain to another. Therefore each party has trust within each other.

Trust is always between exactly 2 parties.
Trust must involve two parties and work both ways. Therefore trust will not happen if both parties are not involved in the sale or service provided.

Trust will involve either direct trust or recommender trust.
Direct trust is when one party is directly trusting another party in a service or item provided. When they have placed trust in the individual, due to a third party recommending that they are trustworthy.

Elements that have been incorporated to increase trust in the sites.

http://www.eBay.com.au
eBay
is considered as being trustworthy as it has a protection policy for buyers. The policy protects consumers from losing money and offers protection of fraudulent behaviour. This type of website allows consumers to build confidence and they are more inclined to use it, as there is less worries of being victims of fraud.

ANZ bank is the well-known and with online customer service, online banking and money transfer services it has provided credibility. It has achieved the credibility by having good security systems in place to protect its customers. Also customers have trust in banks, as they place their savings in a bank and the bank needs to build the trust for that to happen

Think Geek - website homepage has a customer certified badge that points out to customers that they are a trustworthy organisation.

PayPal - is a highly secure website that many larger companies and business use. It has a good reputation and is considered as a very professional website for payments. The Security on the site is very detailed and explains that PayPal takes security issue seriously.
A web site that  looks untrustworthy.

Wikipedia is a website that can be considered as untrusted. This is due to the fact that anyone can add information to the web page. It is what someone has placed an opinion on and it may not be truthful or fact. It is based on the editors thoughts and beliefs.

Channel Conflict

Channel conflict
Channel conflict or otherwise known as dismissal of the online sources. This is done through channel eliminating the middleman may and can help close the gaps between the buyers and sellers.

Benefits of selling directly

In the normal process of distribution channels it would pass through such channels as supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer and finally to the buyer. With a process through cutting out the intermediaries there is direct contact through distribution channels and passing through a chain of supplier, manufacturer and then buyer.
Channel conflict can create benefits such as having direct control with pricing which will keep consumers satisfied therefore having customer returning to your website.

The different types of conflict
Vertical channel conflict:
Is a disagreement that occurs between two or more channel members on a consecutive levels.

Horizontal channel conflict:

Where a disagreement between two or more members of a channel. The members of the channel are on the same level.

Multichannel conflict:

This is where there is a disagreements among members that are in a separate marketing channels

An example where you have purchased something from a company that sells online and from a bricks and mortar store. Explain which one you chose and why?
East Bay is a fantastic online store and has direct factory supplies. It can be easier to buy direct from the supplier rather than buying further down the line at a retail store. It can be more convenient and cost less and also provide far more variety. Also there can be more sales than a bricks and mortar store, this due to the fact that a bricks and mortar store may not have the storage place for a lot of items. Generally there is better product information and guarantees when you buy direct as the brand has more power than the smaller stores.

ONLINE AUCTION

What is eBay's business model?
EBay follows the broker business model, where they acts as a middle person and bring the buyers and sellers together. Ebay offers sellers opportunities to sell their products through an action method and convenes the transactions through a safe payment system.

Why has it been so successful?
Ebay is a worldwide auction site and is the first site to introduce this type of buyer and seller interaction. It has also built trust with customers and it can credited itself with a secure payment option for customers. With Ebay allowing the process of asking the buyer or seller direct questions about the product can make the transaction between customer and seller worries free.
Q2: Other major web sites, like Amazon.com and Yahoo!, have entered the auction marketplace with far less success than eBay.
How has eBay been able to maintain its dominant position?
Amazon and Yahoo offer new products, unlike eBay that offers new, old and used products. Also Amazon and Yahoo have direct suppliers and there is no way to offer less money or have the power to control the amount you may want to spend. Therefore the customer has the feeling that they have more control over their purchase and can bid on products.

Q3: Ebay has a system where customers can communicate between one another. This allows for a more positive transaction between parties involved. Additionally if has a arrangement where customers and buyers can leave feedback about each other. This gives the buyer and seller credibility and can influence others to use the same buyer or seller for future reference.

What kinds of fraud, if any, are eBay users most susceptible?
Ebay has a security payment system in place, through PayPal. This can give customers peace of mind, as transactions are easily done.

Q4: eBay makes every effort to conceptualize its users as a community (as opposed to, say "customers" or "clients").

What is the purpose of this conceptual twist and does eBay gain something by doing it?
Ebay has created a way for people worldwide to connect through a web site that offers and attracts many customers a range of products that may not be assessable to them. By bringing people and countries together eBay benefits from the profit that is made for selling products. However it also has also made it easier for communities and countries to interact in a safe business environment. Therefore this could be seen as a good thing and bring together communities can make a strong sense of pride. Also as quoted by
John Kander, Fred Ebb, “money makes the world go round.”
Q5: eBay has long been a marketplace for used goods and collectibles. Today, it is increasingly a place where major businesses come to auction their wares. Why would a brand name vendor set-up shop on eBay?
There are many reasons why a business may set up a shop on eBay. It could provide to be a cost effective way to sell products that may be a surplus in the shop. It could also save money on renting a premises to sell products, paying staff can become expensive.  Furthermore eBay provides a hassle free environment to many business, as all the transactions are done directly through a PayPal system where the money goes directly into the business account.
There are also opportunities to market products worldwide, unlike a shop, where there may only be products available to shoppers who come into the store.

Automata

Check this link to my ‘intelligent’ cybertwin which I also mentioned in the Powerpoint. You may like to create your own cybertwin as well. The more you 'train' your twin, the better the responses will be. While it is just a fun exercise, Think of the opportunities.Imagine if we had a cybertwin that could answer your questions about the course.
This would be a fantastic idea if all teachers could have a cyber-twin. If the teacher was absent, the cyber twin could then take on the responsibility of the class for the day and students would not miss out on work that was required from them on the day. This could be very beneficial to the teachers and the students.

The dream of scientists and business leaders alike is a machine that can think. Sounds like science fiction but it is closer than you may think. Alan Turing first wrote about the possibilities in the 1940's.
http://www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/reingold/courses/ai/turing.html

Write a one paragraph describing the Turing test and another paragraph describing an argument against the Turing Test, known as the about the Chinese room.
The Turning Test also known as The Imitation Game which was named after Alan Turing who was an English mathematician during the 1940s and 1950s and pioneered artificial intelligence. Turning Test is a technique for defining if a computer has the same capability of thinking like a human. The test is conducted between two people and an independent person like a judge. The people would be placed in separate rooms and asked questions, the judge's job was to decide which of the people where human, and which one was a machine. Turning suggested that if the judge was less than 50% accurate
then the computer could be considered as a passable simulation of a human and therefore be considered as intelligent as a human.
However in contradiction of the Turing test, John Searle argued The Chinese Room. The argument was an attempt to demonstrate that a computer or machine can never think like a human and therefore are not skilled of understanding language. Searle argues that it was a way of manipulating and believing that it can understand language by use of symbols

Can virtual agents succeed in delivering high-quality customer service over the Web?
Virtual agent technology can be beneficial to companies and can offer an unbiased voice to the customer. Therefore a virtual agent can be a successful in delivering high quality customer service. There are many virtual agents that are within the online shopping sectors. With technology  becoming a part of everyday life with many people, this can save time and also can have good customer satisfaction. However issues that may arise from the use of virtual agents might be that the language or voice is not comprehended correctly. therefore this may become annoying to customers and lead to a bad experience.this could effect the future of customers returning to the service.

Digital Markets

What experiences have you had with shopping online?
The majority of the time the experiences have been positive and provided an easy accessible and enjoyable way to shop. Sites such as Ebay online book stores, and clothing stores have been fast, reliable and cost saving. This method of shopping is convenient and therefore you don’t need to leave your home to do it.

Describe a good experience.
There have been numerous experiences with online shopping. Most of the good experiences are when there are no problems .Also when a particular online store is user friendly and has easy options for payments. An online store that answers any enquires quickly, and gives good product descriptions in what I personally would consider as a good experience.

What did you like about the online store you used?
The site was easy to use and contacting the online shop could be done at any time. It was convenient and you appear to have more product choice. Making product selections such as colour, size, new or old are easy to select. Therefore this is far better that in a face to face shop.

Describe a bad experience
Store has not replied to emails that have been sent, due to not receiving an item. Then they continue to send emails to ask if you are happy with the service and the product. This was quite annoying as when you replied to the email and complained about not receiving your product, there was still no response.

What problems did you have with the online store?
Not being able to contact the store to be able to return an item. There has also been times when the item has not been the same as the one described and the quality of the item has been poor compared.

What features make an online store more appealing?
Online stores are convenient, you do not need to leave your home to shop. Therefore this can save you money on transportation. It is much easier to compare prices between products. There is a larger variety of products in one place, to choose from, in comparison to going to a face to face shop.

What features make an online store less appealing?
There is no direct customer service and if you are purchasing items that require to be tried on, you cannot try them on. You are taking the risk of them not fitting when you receive them. Making payment with a credit card might be off putting, as some stores may not have proper security systems in place.

Should we expect to see the prices of goods and services rise or fall due to the migration of consumers online?
Expectations for product and services prices should be expected to be lower, this being due to the online store having less overheads than a face to face store.
Online stores are making the competition harder for face to face stores, therefore face to face stores have to try and compete with the online stores. However many lager store have already pursued to take on online methods. However this has not benefited many customers, as many face to face stores and costs are still the same as shopping in store. Therefore this might indicate that larger stores will retain the same prices even with the migration of many new online shoppers.

Question 2
The dispersion of prices (that is, the spread between the lowest and highest price for a particular product) will narrow.
I defiantly agree with this. As a consumer I am always looking for the best price on something and comparing it to other companies and I’m sure many other people are doing the same so this is going to force companies to keep prices competitive in order to stay at the top.

The importance of brand names will decrease.
Many customers may have already established a loyalty with a particular brand, therefore it might be harder to have them cross over to a new brand. Some customer that may have had a bad experience with a particular brand may be more likely to change brands. For this reason there may not be a decrease in the amount of customers that have already established brand loyalty.

Price competition will make all products cheaper.
This is not necessarily correct, some business may not be able to cut the costs of the products that they have. Having price competition will encourage business to keep cost low, but I do not think it will make all products cheaper.

Digital markets will become dominated by a handful of mega-sites, like Amazon.com.
Yes this may happen, as they are the larger companies in the market, generally when you search for a particular item the larger retailers will be at the top of the search list. As a customer you would typically go with one of those larger profiled companies, as these larger businesses have established a trust by the customers. They also may have better methods and products available to customers.

How do you think the balance of power between buyers and sellers will change?
The buyer will still have control of power between buyer and seller. As there is more options available the buyer can compare product and price, therefore this gives them the power to buy or not. The seller will need to try and influence buyers and this may be hard as there are so many other options available to them.

Prices are clustered online.
This may correct, as many online business have the ability to change the price on the products. In general business set a price that they have set from a profit margin that they would like to obtain. Therefore they have the ability to compare their prices with other online traders, this may begin to become a cluster, due to the nature of them competing with each other.

Online prices are elastic. ( i.e. immune to change up and down with demand)
Yes this is possible. If a brand is new to the market they can have a lower introduction price and once the demand becomes higher for the product they can slowly increase the price. When demand is high for a product generally the cost will be stable. When the demand is low then they might have a promotional strategy where they can offer augmented products with the other product.

Online prices are generally transparent (the extent to which prices for a given product or service are known by buyers in the marketplace.).
This could be considered as a true statement, online prices are sometimes transparent due to some business not giving the true facts on the final costs. This can be seen in business that give an extra cost when you use your credit card or sometimes there is no postage fees shown until final payments are made.

M-Commerce Services and Applications
Mobile commerce has been slow to take off in Australia, partly because of high data costs. The introduction of the iPhone and other smart phones will probably see a huge increase in M-Commerce in the new few years. There is an increasing amount of free and commercial content already available to Australian mobile subscribers. In many countries it M-Commerce is regularly used for-
Mobile bill paymentContent and products
Banking and financial services
Wireless advertising
Location-based services
Games and entertainment

Question 3
What types of m-commerce services does your cell phone provider offer?
Optus is currently my and they with them it allows me to
Pay phone bill
Have internet access
Download and purchase music, movies and any app.
Play games, social media use
Email

Which of these services do you use?
The internet, generally pay phone bill through the app. Regularly email from my phone. Social media is also used. The only product that I am not likely to use is play games.
What types of transactions do you perform through your cell phone or other wireless device?
Sourcing emails, communicating with people through texting or social media. Generally all my transactions are done via wireless devices. This has become a part of everyday life and it would be incredible difficult to try and do anything without a wireless device.

What types of transactions would you like to perform, but are currently unable to?
At the moment there are none that come to mind. Everything that might need to be accessed is already available to me on my wireless devices.
What is your opinion of wireless advertising/mobile marketing?
This is a clever way to try and entice and encourage people to buy products. As a customer it can be very annoying when they are flashing at the bottom of the screen. Also when you close them, they sometimes take you to the site, therefore this can be annoying. But in saying that I guess that business need to try and get customers to try their products and this would be the easiest way for them to communicate with them.

Business Models

A business model can be interpreted as a term that is used for the way a company can sustain itself and therefore create revenue. Consequently a company can incorporate and combine a number of different strategies to enhance their business performance.
There are many categories and definitions for different type of business models. Therefore for the purpose of this blog there will be nine models briefly discussed.

·         Brokerage Models
Bring buyers and sellers together to provide a smooth transaction between the parties. They could be considered as the facilitator between both parties. Brokers have an important role between all the buyers, sellers and transactions, furthermore brokers tend to charge a fee or commission for transactions that take place between the parties involved.

·         Advertising Models
Can be seen as broadcasting through a website, it can be considered as an additional method of media broadcasting via a web site provider. Advertising models are generally incorporated with emails, IM and blogs, they are the advertising popups and banners that form ads. Therefore with higher volume of viewers this model tends to work best. Accordingly this could prove to be a major source of revenue for broadcasters.

Digital Design

A Customer-centric website design is an important factor in creating a successful business. When creating a customer centric website it is essential to consider the needs and wants of the consumers.  Design is important as it needs to catch the user’s attention, be user friendly and attract consumers to reuse your serve in the future. This can help businesses for future predictions of sales and also assist its customers with information and services of the business. Therefore customer centric can be an important part of any businesses success.

There is also a need to consider why customer centric web sites can also be difficult for a business. Many businesses do not consider the needs of the customer and are not user friendly, therefore there is a need to take the experience through the eyes of the customer.  Additionally it can be extremely expensive with the setup of a centric web site, as customers may all require different needs and it is hard to focus on all their needs and requirements.

Companies or individuals appearance on the World Wide Web (WWW) can be defined as its presence. If an organisation, business or individual has a presence on the WWW then they will be easier to find. Therefore if a business has a good presence on the WWW, they may have portrayed a good image to customers, consequently this may increase their credibility. If a business or individual has a poor web site, this could be considered as having poor presence in the WWW.

Business that are reliant on the WWW have to consider other business that may be offering the same services. With a far broader spectrum of audiences via the WWW things can be accessed quicker and save customers time. Therefore this could save costs such as printing advertisements. Nevertheless customers will need to be attracted to the business in some way. Therefore there is a high need to attract new customers and creating trustworthiness. Unlike in the physical world where customers can go to the location, receive the goods and also have communication via face to face service. Customers have usually portrayed a loyal connection with the business prior to going to the location.

There are many fantastic web sites that are functional, attractive and have great purpose. Web sites like e-bay, amazon books and even business such as Big W and JB Hi-Fi are all great way of branding and giving customers choices of their needs. If we were to look at Ebay and amozon books for example, they have a search option and payment options available to customers. It is a fantastic way for customers to see what they are buying prior to purchasing the product, there is also customer feedback required after a purchase has been made. Their sites are user friendly and customers can contact the seller via messaging if requiring more information. Therefore with such an easy way to interact, sell and buy with customers they have built credibility and attained a good status with customers.
